A separate entity from the town of Pinehurst, the S Pinehurst Resort (80 Carolina Vista Dr., 855/235-8507, www.pinehurst.com), which opened in 1895, is the world’s second-largest golf resort and also has three inns. The Carolina (from $399), built in 1901 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is a grand hotel in the Edwardian style, with long piazzas and lush lawns. The 1895 Holly Inn (from $325) was the first hotel built at the resort and is a smaller, cozier, more club-like spot. The third inn, the Manor (from $260), is the smallest and most laid-back of the accommodations; from late 2018 to summer 2019, the Manor will undergo renovations to rooms and public facilities.

The Pinehurst Golf Academy (one week from $2,628, weekend from $2,131) gives weekend and week-long classes for beginners and experienced players taught on Pinehurst 1, 3, and 5, with a stay at the Carolina included in the fee. Also on the grounds is the four-star Spa at Pinehurst ($50-200), with a long menu of skin and body-care therapies; the Tranquility Pass, resort guest access to the full spa facilities for only $40 (and worth every penny). The Pinehurst Tennis Club (courts 8am-9pm daily, $12-15 guests) is regarded as a top tennis resort nationally, with a high-quality pro shop and adult tennis camps. Golf, spa, and tennis packages can significantly reduce the overall cost of a stay at the Pinehurst, but surcharges for amenities might still apply.
